IP cameras vs analog: which one to install in 2026

Analog CCTV isn't dead but it's clearly on the way out. Here's a clear framework for when to buy which — and what to do with existing cabling.

Most of the security-camera questions we get from Cape Breton business owners boil down to the same thing: my existing system is old and I don't know whether to just upgrade the cameras or rip everything out and start over. The answer is one of three, depending on what you have and what you want. Here they are.

The short version

  • New install, no existing cabling: go IP. Not close. Analog is the wrong choice for a new install in 2026.
  • Existing analog system, cameras still work fine: leave it alone until something breaks. There's no urgent reason to rip out a working system.
  • Existing analog system, something's failing: this is the decision. Read on.

Why IP wins for new installs

A modern IP camera does everything an analog camera used to do, plus:

  • Actual resolution. 4MP-8MP versus analog's ~1MP-equivalent. That's the difference between "there was a person" and "that's Bob from the shop next door."
  • One cable per camera (PoE). Same Ethernet cable carries power and data. Analog needs two cables (video + power) and often a separate transformer.
  • Smart features that actually work. Motion zones (ignore the parking lot but alert on the door), person/vehicle classification, license-plate reading on higher-end models, all built into the camera not bolted on later.
  • Remote viewing that doesn't suck. Watch live or scrub through history from your phone. Analog can technically do this through the DVR but it's clunky and low-resolution.
  • Better low-light performance. Modern IP cameras with IR + starlight sensors capture usable footage in near-dark. Old analog cameras don't.

When it's fine to stick with analog

If your current analog system is working and giving you footage you're happy with, don't fix what isn't broken. There's no security-industry conspiracy forcing you to upgrade. Wait until something specific triggers a decision — a camera fails, the DVR dies, you need coverage in a new area, or you find yourself squinting at footage of an actual incident and wishing you could read the license plate.

The upgrade paths (in order of cost)

Path 1: keep the cabling, swap the cameras and head unit

If your existing coax runs are in good shape and reasonable length, you can usually reuse them with BNC-to-Ethernet baluns and swap in HD-over-coax cameras (a middle ground — better than old analog, not as good as pure IP). This is the cheapest upgrade path. You keep the runs, replace the endpoints. Not great, but works for tight budgets.

Path 2: keep some cabling, upgrade to full IP

Sometimes we can reuse cable runs for a full IP install if the paths make sense — pulling one Cat6 through the same route as the old coax. Not always possible (Cat6 has different bend radius, longer runs need re-terminating), but often possible. This is the "meaningful upgrade" tier and probably where most businesses should land if they're replacing anyway.

Path 3: fresh install

If your building has changed, your camera locations don't work anymore, or your existing cabling is bad — start over. It costs more upfront but you end up with a system designed for what you actually need today, not what you wanted in 2012.

What actually matters when you're buying

Ignore the marketing spec sheets. The four things that determine whether your security system is worth its cost:

  1. Camera placement and coverage. Two well-placed cameras beat six badly-placed ones. This is design work, not shopping.
  2. Resolution matched to the job. An entry-facing camera at 8MP is worth more than four PTZ cameras at 2MP. Match resolution to what you need to identify.
  3. Night performance. If you don't get good footage after dark, you don't have a security system — you have an expensive daytime-only camera.
  4. Recording retention. A system that only keeps 5 days of footage misses incidents you find out about a week later. 30 days is table stakes for business; 60-90 days is common.
